Program Overview

MCAT

At IHL, we have helped countless students dramatically increase their MCAT scores since we began offering MCAT tutoring in 2002. Our MCAT program was developed over many years via the collaboration of brilliant medical students, residents, practicing physicians and researchers at programs including Yale, Michigan, Johns Hopkins and others. Our program is effective, comprehensive, and custom-tailored to your specific needs. We use in house-materials, officially released MCAT exams as well as an ever-evolving list of third-party sources that we view to be the best for a particular topic. Since we do not rely exclusively on proprietary materials, we are able to cherry-pick the best materials from as many sources as possible to augment our curriculum.

IHL employs some of the smartest and most accomplished MCAT tutors out there. I had initially planned to apply to D.O. schools, but after studying with IHL, my MCAT score improved so dramatically that I was able to set my sights on an M.D. program.

MCAT Process

To get started, complete a brief contact form. Our Chief of Staff Alex Kopko will contact you to discuss your goals and needs and get you started with a more detailed enrollment form

Generally, the preparation process begins with a diagnostic exam that you will take at home. Along with these results, we also consider factors such as learning style, learning disabilities, budget, strengths, weaknesses and goals before matching you with a tutor best suited to your individual needs.
You can work with a junior, senior or chair-level tutor. Our founder Mayssoun Bydon also works with a select number of students each year on the CARS section. Once you have been placed with a tutor, he or she will contact you to schedule your first session. While all of our tutors are fluent in IHL’s proven teaching methodologies, they are also flexible, dynamic educators who are able to adapt to a wide variety of individual learning styles.
Our tutors work around your schedule and can meet in person at one of our offices or remotely via Skype or Zoom. The majority of our students meet remotely, and we have found it to be as effective as in-person consultation. The length of sessions, number of sessions, and frequency of sessions is up to you! Average sessions are 2-3 hours in length, twice a week, for three to four months leading up to an MCAT administration.
Outside of tutoring sessions, you should expect to dedicate a significant amount of time to session review, homework, practice exams and other drills.

Our Tutors

Our tutors are more than study buddies. They are passionate, experienced, and dedicated instructors who have typically scored in the 97th percentile on the MCAT. The majority attend top medical schools or residency programs. Their expertise goes beyond the test itself.

Attacking the MCAT

In addition to offering expert instruction in the biological and physical sciences, our unique approach emphasizes the Verbal Reasoning section, providing crucial guidance for students whose previous academic focus has been weighted toward the sciences. IHL employs a number of Verbal Reasoning specialists who utilize a variety of teaching materials and sources beyond sample MCAT passages.

Filling the Gaps

Given the nature of the MCAT exam and the breadth of the subject matter in the sciences, many of our students use IHL as a supplement alongside mass-market preparation courses. Many students come to us to fill gaps in knowledge, focus on specific science topics, augment their verbal score, and/or fine-tune their test-taking strategies. Whether you want to hone your understanding of certain topics, take and review practice exams or simply pick the brain of a brilliant medical student/resident, IHL can accommodate your needs.

Questions About MCAT Prep

We typically advise students to dedicate at least three to four months to the preparation process, although we are happy to begin working with you at any point leading up to your test.
Tutoring is billed on an hourly basis and the rate depends on the tutor’s seniority level. There is no minimum number of tutoring hours required to enroll with IHL. Our coursepacks and other materials are billed separately. Contact our Chief of Staff, Alex Kopko, to discuss your options.
Wherever you are in the world, you can take advantage of our program. MCAT tutoring is available in-person at our offices in New York City or Ann Arbor, or remotely via Skype, Zoom, FaceTime or other videoconferencing platforms. The majority of our students study with us remotely, and we have found it to be as effective as in-person consultation.
The foundation of IHL’s business model is client service and sophisticated advice. IHL does not take a cookie-cutter approach to working with students. We believe that an individualized plan and mutual trust are necessary for any effective tutoring and mentoring relationship. IHL works with only 100 to 200 students a year, to ensure that we maintain our high level of service and intimate client focus. We take a team-based approach to everything we do.
